Alkyl halides, super hydrogen production and the pathogenesis of pneumatosis cystoides coli.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The colons of patients with pneumatosis cystoides coli produce excessive H2. Exposure to alkyl halides could explain this. Six consecutive patients who had pneumatosis cystoides coli while taking chloral hydrate (1-5+ g/day) are reported. Patients 2 and 3 were investigated after they had ceased chloral hydrate treatment. One produced methane, the other did not. (Pneumatosis ...

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon condition of unknown aetiology. Bacterial gas production may be an important aetiological factor, but experimental evidence in humans has been lacking. We have studied breath hydrogen excretion as an index of bacterial gas production in 12 patients with PCI and have shown that four out of five with demonstrable cysts produced unusually hig...

Endotracheal intubation and intermittent positive pressure ventilation were used to overcome the difficulties of oxygen therapy for pneumatosis cystoides coli in a 9-year-old child with Down's syndrome and a congenital heart defect. As compared to previously reported cases, a shorter duration of treatment and a lower arterial oxygen tension proved successful.

A 64-year-old Japanese woman with ulcerative colitis visited our hospital for abdominal distention. Laboratory examinations and abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated no abnormal findings. Colonoscopy showed sessile polypoid lesions with no overlying mucosal abnormalities in the ascending colon (Picture 1). These lesions were soft and dented when pressed by biopsy forceps. Plain computed tomogr...
